I received this recipe, originally, from a co-worker, Teri, who I worked with in the 80s. It is basically the popular Seven Layer Bar Cookie or Magic Cookie Bars without the nuts. Hello Dolly Dainties are on our Christmas Cookie baking day list every year. And don’t you just love the name?!
I have recipes for several versions of these including not only one with nuts but also one with mini-marshmallows. I love these bar cookies and so does my brother-in-law, Ed. And, since he and my sister-in-law are cooking Thanksgiving dinner for us this year, I thought that making him a batch of these would be nice. Thankfully he shares!
The cast of characters.
Put a stick of butter or margarine in a 9 x 13 glass baking dish. No need to dirty any other dishes!
Preheat oven to 350°. Put the baking dish into the oven and while it’s preheating, the butter will melt. Takes about 10 minutes.
Remove from the oven, dump in the graham cracker crumbs and combine with a fork.
Once combined, pat down with the back side of a large spoon.
Sprinkle on the chips. Note on packaging sizes: the original recipe calls for 6 ounces of each type of chip which used to be 1/2 a bag. However, many chips now come in less than 12 ounce packages. I hate it when manufacturers do this, but this recipe is flexible. You can use 1/2 of a 11 or 11.5 ounce package, too. It’s all good.
Sprinkle on the flaked coconut.
Pour the sweetened condensed milk all over the top. Scrape the can to get out all of the goodness!
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. The original recipe calls for this to cook much longer. I’ve found that the shortened cooking time makes for a better cookie – just a little soft and gooey.
I recommend cutting into squares while still warm, but do not remove from pan until completely cooled and set.
This is a somewhat imperfect square! Enjoy these, they are yummy!
Hello Dolly Dainties Makes 24 bars, easy peasy 1/2 cup (one stick) of butter or margarine Preheat oven to 350°. Put one stick of butter or margarine directly in 9 x 13 glass baking dish, and pop it into the oven until it is melted. If you put it in while the oven is preheating, it takes about 10 minutes. Dump the graham cracker crumbs directly onto the melted butter. Mix together with a fork, and pat down firmly with the back of a large spoon. Layer the chips and coconut on top of the graham cracker crumb base. Pour the sweetened condensed milk in ribbons over the top of this. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until edges are browned. Allow to cool. Cut into bars.
1-1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
6 ounces or 1 cup butterscotch chips
6 ounces or 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1-1/3 cups flaked coconut
1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
