This is the day which prompted our Freaky Family Fun adventure.
My brother-in-law’s birthday.
Originally, we were all going to go to Oregon to visit my sister and her family who live in Eugene, but my brother-in-law is fighting Cancer and does not feel up to traveling too far from home so we brought the party to him.
I flew to Oregon and then drove with my sister and her two teenagers back to Minnesota where my other sister lives with her husband – the birthday boy.
My Oregonian brother-in-law and my DSH both came in for the Fourth of July holiday and our brother-in-law’s birthday. It was multi-state Freaky Family Fun.
My brother-in-law may or may not have turned 65, but he can still rock out.
He hasn’t seen my niece and nephew, who live in Oregon, for a few years so they had fun getting to know each other. They shared their love of books and science fiction movies. We watched the original 1953 classic, The War of the Worlds, along with other science fiction classics.
My niece and nephew had fun with the dogs.
And someone (aka “the Aunts”) may have spoiled them with soda and cookies and other treats.
By the evening of my brother-in-law’s birthday, a front started moving in that broke the three digit heat wave that had engulfed the Midwest and much of the country for days. Minnesotans, along with Oregonians, are not used to such intensive heat.
What a relief!
We ended the day singing the Happy Birthday song and with birthday cake. Why, you ask, did we have the birthday candle stuck into a pineapple?
True Story – My brother-in-law’s favorite cake is German chocolate cake; however, each year his mother would make him a Pineapple Upside Down Cake, which was his brother’s favorite cake (and my BIL’s least favorite). So we kept teasing him that we were going to make him a Pineapple Upside Cake. But we didn’t. We served a regular cake with some homemade ice cream and pineapple and maraschino cherries on the side.
