Last year was the first full year of my blog. As I look at some of my older posts, I feel that my writing style is improving. There is more flow and less stilted language. I’m also enjoying learning to use my big girl camera and working on improving my photography skills especially when it comes to food photography.
I spend a fair amount of time each day writing and editing photographs. I often have several posts in my draft queue at any given point in time. I use the drafts to brainstorm ideas and put down thoughts for future posts. If I’m going to be away from home, I will write posts in advance and schedule them to go live on specific days.
I took a week off over the holidays and have spent the last two weeks trying to get back into the groove of writing again. It is true what other writers say that you have to do it all the time to keep the creative juices flowing.
With that all being said, it is often the posts that I write off the cuff that generate the most comments. I can only assume that some of my editing is taking some of the raw emotion out of my writing. My family would probably say that’s a good thing.
Over the last year, I moved from posting daily to treating my blog more like work and posting only Monday through Friday. I authored 303 posts in 2011.
My views have been going up steadily. My total views in 2011 were 31,563 and that excludes my own views and spam.
My average number of views per day was 86, but my number one day was November 22, 2011, with 360 views. My post on that day was What’s Cookin’ – Pineapple Upside Down Cake, but the actual post with the most views on that day was What’s Cookin’ – Fudge Striped Shortbread Turkey Cookies. What was more exciting to me was that I had views on several dozen of my previous posts on that day. It wasn’t just the goofy turkey cookies that people were reading about.
I receive a lot of comments on my posts. Many comments are posted on my Mama’s Empty Nest Facebook Fan Page, and I receive a lot of private comments, too, but my number one post with comments was Acts of Rebellion which generated quite a lot of back and forth dialogue.
Sometime in the next few days, my blog will move beyond 40,000 views. I appreciate everyone visiting and commenting and posting links to my blog on Pinterest and Facebook and other social media.
I look forward to writing about our actual empty nest and working on cooking for two recipes over the next year. Oh, and since it’s an election year, I’m sure they’ll be plenty of fun stuff to talk about there, too!
Most of all I wanted to thank everyone for visiting and being a part of my life!
