My Sister, The Iron Girl

This past weekend, dear sweet hubby and I traveled to Minnesota to watch my sister compete in her first ever running and biking race – a duathlon.  A duathlon involves running and biking as opposed to a triathlon that adds a swimming leg to the event.

She competed in the Athleta Iron Girl Bloomington Women’s Duathlon which included a  2 mile run, a 22 mile bike ride, and another 2 mile run.

She did all of this in under 3 hours.

Did I say that she is over 50?

Here she was before the race with a big smile on her face.  She was ready to go.  She has been training for months.

Can you tell she was excited?

Here she was after the first 11 miles of the 22 mile bike ride.  Still smiling.

Here she was near the end of the 22 mile bike ride.  Still smiling.

Here she was finishing the race – after a 2 mile run, a 22 mile bike ride, and another 2 mile run.  Official time 2:41:49.

After the race.  Still smiling.

My sister and my brother-in-law.  He was smiling out of pride, but also out of relief.  He was worried about her.  He’s a little bit of a worrier anyway.

I’m so glad that we got to share this experience with her.  She’s looking forward to doing this again.  She’s already thinking about how she can improve her training and her transition time (that’s when you switch between each leg of the event and timing is important).

I’ll be there to support her.  From the sidelines.
