My Senior Prom

I’m missing my 35th high school reunion this year.  I’m missing it because I am attending a high school themed convention at the other end of the state.  I think that’s funny and ironic.

Saturday night’s theme is “Prom” and most of the attendees will be wearing old prom dresses.  Should be hilarious.  My senior prom’s theme was “Colour My World” by Chicago.  It was a popular slow-dance song at high school proms and dances during the 1970s.  That’s because you could press your hot, sweaty teenage body against another one for a full 3 minutes and 14 seconds.  And dance really slowly.

I had a date to prom.  He was my steady boyfriend of nearly a year who graduated from the same high school I attended only a year ahead of me.  We went to prom together the year before.  Three days before the dance, he broke up with me.  He had been dating a “college girl” and she was, apparently, more “accommodating” than I was.  If you know what I mean.  Yes, he actually told me that.  But in different words.

My best friend scrounged up a date for me, but I chose to wallow in self pity and skip prom.  Never did like the song, Colour My World, anyway.  But I really liked to slow dance.

As time goes on
I realize
Just what you mean
To me
And now
Now that you’re near
Promise your love
That I’ve waited to share
And dreams
Of our moments together
Colour my world with hope of loving you
